Cheer and Win

Traditions... rituals are key to any brand. The trick is to establish the tradition. The NFL has had the Pro Bowl for ever and while the NFL brand is wildly popular the Pro Bowl has never take off. For 2010 the game was cleverly slotted in the pre-Super Bowl dead time and the ratings improved dramatically whether this will build the Pro Bowl as a real brand. Sometimes, however, a brand does not having the strength to stand on its own.

Florida International University is still in the process of building a football brand, a football tradition. Think of why you went to a you football game as a freshman. It was the thing to do. The group in the dorm was going and going along was the thing to do. Now imagine that there was no group carrying you along getting you in the habit; no tradition.

FIU has therefore come up with a plan of priming the pump of tradition by offering $500 scholarships to student attending games this fall. While this is an interesting incentive there is more to creating a college football fan tradition than just getting bodies in the stands.

No Beer For You

Students who get drunk and rowdy at a University of Minnesota football game may be asked to make a special stop — at a breath-test machine — before entering the next time.

So maybe the bars near TCF Bank Stadium won't need extra capacity as students that attend the game and act inappropriately will be flagged and made to take a little test. Would anyone be willing to have the same rule apply to all the fans. Drunk stupid behavior is not only the limited to just students.

Implanting RFID chips would save alot of time and might be able to provide real time blood alcohol reports.

Playing on Empty

Construction Cam

Roll over to pick your seat

Ever been to a shopping mall that is struggling? The empty stores tell the even the casual consumer that the business is struggling. In the current economic difficulties, decisions made more than two years ago seem silly and poorly thought out. Truth is, way back in 2007 the personal wealth created by the real estate boom was the drug that allowed the populace to look at the future with beer goggle. Fans can keep spending because home price never go down.

(I do have contempt for that part of American society that over consumed. Using the equity in real estate as a personal piggy bank is reckless and shortsighted. Given the wide spread practice of this the entire economy has been put in peril by lack of personal fiscal prudence. Washington and Wall Street played a role but the consumer made the final poor choices.)

Today the Baltimore Sun reported on the poor progress of selling luxury suites at the University of Maryland--UM looking for suite buyers at Byrd. In 2007 adding 64 luxury boxes the Byrd Stadium made sense, beer goggle sense. Now as the grand opening approaches 24 (37.5%) remain unsold. The announcement was noted in this blog HERE .

From that prior post:

"The first phase of expansion - scheduled to be completed by August 2010 - includes 64 swanky suites with flat-screen televisions, food services, and indoor and outdoor seating. Maryland can't move forward with its other plans, though, until at least 50 of the luxury suites have been sold...Ten suites have already been sold..."

Help me with the math here but they could not move forward until 50 had been sold...but only 40 have been sold.

"The cost for phase one of the project is $50.8 million, to be paid entirely by the athletic department. Maryland sold the naming rights of the field to Chevy Chase Bank for $20 million last year, and borrowed $35 million from the University System of Maryland."

And given the lack of sales will there be any problems with paying back the loan?

As other sports have found the luxury box is not a sure thing and the revenue does not always justify the cost.

Please buy a box!

Would winning even sell these boxes?

Look Out for Pirates

Which ACC Bowl game should East Carolina go to? Should a 13-0 record put them in the Orange Bowl? Can they do a worse than the ACC teams in recent memory? Or let’s imagine that ECU goes 11-2 losing in the C-USA Championship game, but winning their three games against Virginia Tech, Virginia, and NC State. Is it fair that the Pirates will go to the GMAC Bowl while a lesser team from the Atlantic Coast Conference goes to the Chick-fil-A, Gator, or Champ Bowl by virtue of the conference membership?

Much has been made of the “BCS Busters” where a deserving team from a lesser non-BCS conference gets the dream of a life time and is allowed to sit at the big money table. That’s nice and makes good PR but this still leaves the Mountain West, WAC, and C-USA thin on their slate of bowl games. With the current bowl ties the casting director for the bowl games hands are tie to what they have already signed up for.
Keeping with ECU (but there may be several other teams that could fit this bill) might a match up of the Pirates and Alabama (using the projections from Scouts.com) make for a more interesting Chick-fil-A Bowl that a 8-4 Boston College?

As stated before on this blog bowl game are all about bring people to your city to fill hotel and restaurant during the slow holiday season. Organizers are then keen on lock in the best chance of bring people to town for the game and not particularly interesting in the most intriguing games at the end of the season.

Maybe we need a second tier bowl to become a free agent and be willing to gamble on presenting the fans with a interesting game rather than the current locked slate of “if there is nothing else on” games.

Note: When thinking of a tile for this post I remembered a book that I read in 2nd or 3rd grade and putting the title into Google found that you (and maybe me) can buy at copy from Amazon. At $48 cherished memeories are getting expensive.

Does the impact of a economic slowdown or recession (technically speaking requires two quarters of negative GDP) translate into lower attendance at college football games?

Several of Atlanta's pro teams, including the Falcons and Braves, also have cited the slow economy as a challenge in sales. One team not impacted: the Georgia Bulldogs, who have sold out of football season tickets and rejected orders for new seats from customers with less than $10,651 in lifetime contributions to the athletics program.

If you have a product worth buying the answer is no…simply no a slowdown in the economy hurts those that are offering a weak product; like the Atlanta Falcons.

Georgia Tech while pacing behind last year according to the AJC article is actually doing well considering having had two teams with fanatical fans, Georgia and Clemson, last season that would tend to push up ticket sales. New coach Paul Johnson brings the new factor to the sales equation and perhaps attracts some new fans wanting to take a gamble on getting in on the ground floor. Still the cheap seat gross margin is slim and gets slimmer considering the total cost of the transactions.

Despite a good football tradition the Yellow Jackets are a fringe big time team with the additional problem of needing to compete with a full set of local pro teams and the big Dawg for the fan’s dollars.

An interesting point in the article is the recruiting of local fans without ties to the university. Traditionally there are two ways to get fans: loyal alumni and winning. As most college teams lack the marketing muscle of a NFL, MLB, NBA or even NHL organization, the success of Coach Johnson is the best hope of selling more seats.

Note the $150 seats are sold out.

One more question: Give the expense of a television ad, will GT getting enough incremental sales to make it pay?

2008 reserved season tickets available

Aug. 06, 2008

A limited amount of reserved seating is available at Walston-Hoover Stadium for Wartburg College’s 2008 football season.

The cost for the five-game home campaign is $50 per season ticket for the general public. For parents, college faculty and staff and athletic boosters, it’s $30 per season ticket. Seating will be available in the middle two sections (D/E) starting from the press box area down on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All other stadium seating will be general admission. Some general admission seats may be available in D/E sections. Gates open an hour-and-a-half before kickoff, and a reserved ticket guarantees fans a seat.

Last year’s reserved ticket holders have until Monday, Aug. 18, to purchase their same seats. To reserve seats, send a note identifying how many tickets will be purchased and a check for $50 (general public) or $30 (college faculty and staff and athletic boosters) per ticket to: Wartburg Football Reserved Tickets, c/o Wartburg Athletics, P.O. Box 1003, Waverly, IA 50677. After the deadline passes, all seating will be open to the general public.

Tickets will be available to pick up at the booth on the west side of Walston-Hoover Stadium Saturday, Sept. 6, prior to kickoff against St. Norbert’s College of De Pere, Wis. Further questions can be directed to the Wartburg athletic office at 319-352-8309.

Be sure to give the stadium a look and listen to the voices of the students.

Buffalo Bulls

Positioning themselves to fill the void if and when the Bills move on UB can now boast the all their games will be on television for the upcoming season. Yes, they are moving up in the world of college football but given that they last had a winning season during Nixon's first term there is still lots of room for improvement.

And Now You Know....

...the rest of the story

You'd better sit down: Price of SEC football seats soars is a good article with a look at the price of seeing games at SEC schools. Apparently, the author does not go in for the way to find a bargain that has recently hit the food page where you learn that you can shop smarter and save money.

For instance, Florida charges only $224 for season tickets because purchasing them requires a $4,200 minimum donation. That means Florida fans are paying at least $632 per game, tops in the SEC and a 183 percent increase from 1998.

The reaction, “They get how much to see a season of games?” In theory you could donate $4200 and buy one ticket or if you read the Florida 2008 Season Ticket brochure (in .pdf form) you will see that a $4200 donation allows you to purchase up to four season tickets. Quick math tells us then at the minimum season ticket is $1274 or $182 per game. Reading further into the season ticket order form you find that there are numerous donation levels from the big time donor to the struggling new graduate. The true cost is far too complex to put into a newspaper article but, Jon Solomon is at the least guilt of ignorance or more likely sensationalizing. Also notice the upcoming price increase schedule for 2010. Stubhub.com Florida Tickets Link Here.

The lesson of this article is the old adage about pricing. Charge as much as you can get away with. A simple idea with the tricky problem of where the maximum price is that does not piss off your customers.

A piece of advice for anyone that really wants to see their SEC team play; hope they are on Vanderbilt home schedule and then plan a road trip to that game. Birmingham, Alabama to Nashville, Tennessee is about 200 miles (400 miles round trip) Auburn tickets are $28. This might just be worth the trip.

On the other hand, is $3 too much to pay for seats at the Duke v. Vanderbilt game?

Question to think about with the secondary market for college football tickets: Does the big must see game depress the price of other games on the schedule?
